Cynthia Ikponmwenosa Morgan, popularly known as Cynthia Morgan is the only child of her mother, the Edo State-born artiste was raised by a single parent. In this chat with ORUKPE NELSON the 22-year old opened up on her unique style, relationship and sundry issues…
How many singles have you so far, and on which record label are you onto?
I have a whole lot of singles, but I actually have three singles, which are Don’t Break My Heart, Lead Me On and my very new I Am Taken. I signed to Jude Okoye record label, the elder brother of Peter and Paul Okoye of P-square, under his Northside Entertainment label.
What kind of song do we find in your music?
I call them good music because I am very versatile, I am a very versatile artiste. I do all kinds of music ranging from Afro beat, dance hall, rap, and I sing as well. I am of so many parts and that reflect in my music; that is why fans love what I do. I come with different unique styles, different from every other artist in the industry, because you cannot put me in a box.
What were the challenges, especially with the video of Lead Me On?
The challenge with Lead Me On was first with the unfamiliar location. I didn’t get to the location early, so we didn’t have day light; and as the video is meant to be a mixture of day light and night, we just had to shoot the video at night. It was pretty much good getting into character, because I wasn’t ready so we had issues but at the end of the day, it turned out a great video.
What were your expectations from Lead Me On?
Actually, I did have great expectations for Lead Me On because we set out to achieve something no Nigerian artistes have ever done. It’s something new and fresh, when it came out, the audio was quite massive; people loved it because it’s something different, and of international standard. I knew the song is going to be big and people are going to love it.
What has that translated into?
Recently, I just got nominated for the NEA awards, Best Females Artist Of The Year and Best Rap Artist Of The Year and that’s all for now, and I am also pretty much sure that other nominations will be coming up. Before now, I have won about two recognition awards in high schools and universities.
What does it feel like being in same categories with male artistes in best rap?
I will always say talent does not have anything to do with gender, if you are good, you are good. I think it’s even best if they nominate you and the male artists, it shows how strong you are, how strong your music is because in this part of the world, people see females as weak and the guys dominate; but being in the same category with guys, you know you do it better, it’s something huge and good.
Cynthia Morgan is actually the next big thing from the stable of Cynthia Morgan because we have a lot of work to do, the fans base is getting bigger. Everybody is seeing the dreams, so by the grace of God, we are going to be the best thing that has ever happened to African music industry.
What is your advice to upcoming artistes?
Just be yourself in all you do; do not let people toss you around, pray and leave your trust in God because “All good things come to those who wait on the Lord”. Good things don’t come easy and you have to believe in yourself, believe in what you do because if you don’t believe in yourself, people can’t believe in you, you’re the only person that sees your dreams.
Having a dream is different from having a business and I think one of the hardest things in life is having your dream, because nobody can actually see your dream and you have to work it out before others believe in you. So believe in your dream, remain focused and pray.
