Gabros International Football, a Nigerian football club based in the city of Nnewi, currently plays in the Nigeria Premier League. The team, which used to play games in Aba, moved back to Nnewi in 2005. They were promoted to the Nigeria Premier League within seven months of being founded in 1997, the fastest promotion in Nigerian football history.

In his words the 43-year-old oil magnate said “My ownership of the Ifeanyi Ubah FC is a dream come true. I had longed to own a football club years ago. As a young man I played the game and at some point I was involved in the management of club football, so I am not a novice in the running of a football club.

“We seem not to know what we have in this country in terms of football standard. I feel ashamed whenever I see Nigerian young players go to lesser football-playing countries to play professional soccer. I don’t see why our players should run to places like South Africa, Malta, India, Bangladesh and even Israel to play professional football, when in the actual sense, with proper organization and planning, the Nigerian league is better. My dream is to make Nigeria the Mecca of club football in the world,” he said.
