Shades of Life Foundation, a leading non-profit organization committed to ensuring that neurodivergent individuals and people with related developmental disabilities live life to their full potential, has successfully concluded the third edition of its flagship initiative, Ride4Autism West Africa 3.0, covering over 420 kilometers from Lagos, Nigeria to Benin Republic, and back, to raise awareness and support for autism across the region.

This year’s ride, themed ‘Embracing Difference’, witnessed a small group of cyclists who braved challenging terrains and weather conditions, engaging with local communities, schools, and organizations to spread knowledge about autism and encouraging acceptance, symbolizing unity and cross-border collaboration in addressing neurodiversity.

During the ride through Cotonou, Benin Republic, Shades of Life Foundation paused for a quick #KnowTheSigns campaign at Brèsil Public Primary School, Ouidah, where the cyclists hosted an interactive session with teachers, parents, and community leaders, focusing on the early identification of autism symptoms and the importance of seeking timely professional help.

“Our visit to Brèsil Public Primary School, Ouidah, was a reminder that awareness begins at the grassroots level. Teachers and parents are the first line of support for children, and by empowering them with knowledge, we are building a future where no child is left behind,” said Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo, Founder of Shades of Life Foundation.
By equipping teachers with knowledge and tools, the Foundation reinforced the critical role schools play in spotting developmental differences early. Parents were encouraged to seek medical and therapeutic support without fear of stigma, ensuring children receive the interventions they need to thrive.
The school visit was met with enthusiasm, with teachers pledging to integrate autism awareness into their classrooms and parents expressing gratitude for the practical guidance offered. This engagement underscored the Foundation’s mission to bridge knowledge gaps and foster inclusive communities across West Africa.
Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo, Founder and CEO of Shades of Life Care Limited and Shades of Life Foundation, also added about the campaign:
“Ride4Autism West Africa is more than a cycling event; it is a movement of hope, resilience, education, and advocacy. By riding across borders, we remind society that autism knows no boundaries, and neither should compassion and inclusion. Our #KnowTheSigns campaign ensures that parents and educators are equipped to recognize autism early and provide the right support.”
Upon the cyclists’ return to Lagos, the ride was completed with a visit to Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Club, for the 7th Play With Stephen Golf Tournament — a golf tournament that raises awareness and funds for organizations that work with autistic people across West Africa.
With the successful completion of the Ride4Autism West Africa 3.0 campaign, Shades of Life Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring autism awareness reaches every community, families are empowered with knowledge, and children across Africa have the opportunity to thrive in inclusive, supportive environments.
