Journalists have just less than one month remaining to submit their entries to the 2015 Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism. Entries will close at midnight on 29 February 2016.
Sanlam established the annual Awards in 1974 as a platform to recognise and celebrate excellence in financial journalism. Journalists from across the continent are encouraged to submit entries for the African Growth Story category which focuses on the economic awakening of the African continent. Submissions should highlight both the rise and the obstacles and challenges to growth in terms of investments, infrastructural development and economic progress. This award is presented to a journalist practising in Africa whose work was published and/or broadcast on the continent between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2015.
Kenya’s Business Daily journalist, Mr Neville Otuki won the Best Newcomer award in 2014 based on his strong entry for the African Growth Story category. He says: “These Awards provide a robust platform for journalists across the continent to grow their experience, and are a powerful tool for injecting a spirit of professionalism and competency in financial journalists throughout Africa. I entered last year because I believed the Awards would offer me the best chance to share Kenya’s growth story with the continent, as well as give me a platform for growth.”
Otuki encourages others to enter the Awards this year, adding: “Winning the Best Newcomer award made me strive for further excellence in financial reporting. Entering this year will certainly offer others a platform for growth too. They should work hard and have self-belief in their efforts.” Otuki walked away with the R15 000 (KES105 997) prize money.
The special awards – Best Newcomer, Lifetime Achievement and Financial Journalist of the Year – are determined by the judging panel based on entries received in all categories. The judges will also select the best performers in each discipline/medium (online, print, radio and television).
The judging panel will evaluate entries based on news value, impact, rigour in reporting, analytical value, originality, integrity, specialist knowledge and story-telling.
