The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reacted to the reported attack on him and his entourage by suspected thugs in Benue State on Tuesday.

Obi described the incident as “ridiculous and worrisome,” saying he travelled to the state to show support for a family affected by a recent killing in the community.

According to him, while he and his team were leaving the area, some suspected thugs blocked their way and shouted, “Peter Obi, go back.”

“I was wondering, are we still in Nigeria?” Obi said.

He explained that he was in Benue as a presidential candidate to meet and familiarise himself with the people, especially as political activities for the 2027 election have started.

Obi called on security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant agencies, to investigate the incident and take action.

“This rascality cannot be allowed. We have people who can confront these people on our own if they say the government can no longer provide us with security,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor also made it clear that he was not in Benue to contest for governor. He said he was there as a presidential candidate to interact with the people and understand their concerns.

According to Obi, the group that blocked his entourage was allegedly led by the Special Adviser on Youths to the Benue State governor. He questioned how such an incident could happen without the knowledge of the state government and security agencies.

Obi stressed that, as a presidential candidate, he has the right to travel to any part of the country. “We are not here to fight anybody,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the growing level of thuggery in Benue, saying many young people are involved because they lack jobs and other means of livelihood.

Obi said his government would focus on creating jobs and opportunities for young people if elected.
