My War With Wizkid – Davido

Davido-1David Adedeji Adeleke popularly referred to as Davido enjoyed a greatly rewarding 2014. This, however, might be the reason he is upping the ante for 2015 with a massive album launch. Recently, he embraced his arch-rival, Ayodeji Balogun otherwise known as Wizkid, at the 2014 Headies Awards, which stirred a lot of discussion among showbiz buffs. In this interview with ORUKPE NELSON, the singer shares his plans for 2015, resolved face-off with Wizkid, and his many awards…

How has 2014 been for you; career wise?

I’ll summarise my year as very great and I thank God for the blessings and the support from my fans. I started the year with a fresh hit ‘Skelewu’. So, I had a lot to prove because that was like my first international hit. I had gone on tour and done many things. To me, 2014 has been wonderful.

Many believed that the song ‘Aye’ was phenomenal. Do you agree with this thinking?

The response to the song ‘Aye’ has been amazing, shout out to T–Spize, who produced the song. The song was actually meant to be a sound track for a movie, but I won’t disclose the movie since it didn’t happen. So, we decided to just keep the record, along the line, we decided to drop it and see how it will grow. I remembered I was in SouthAfrica when the song dropped on February 7, and in just three days, it was everywhere. Aye is my fastest grown song thus far.

What about awards, which one swarmed your kitty this year?

I don’t want to discredit any award show. I got 23 this year (2014) but the one I really wanted was the BET. I thank God that I got it.

How did you feel not winning in any of the five categories you were nominated for in the Channel O Awards?

Everybody knew that it was planned. I even knew that before the award show, but I just had to perform for my boy ‘LilKesh’. Truly, I knew that I wasn’t going to win. Somebody told me that they’ve gone funny and changed the names, but it’s all good, I’m still cool with them. I have Channel O Awards that I have won before. So, they are trying to say that MTV and BET with 17 million views compared to 600,000 for Channel O are wrong. You do the arithmetic.

You appear to have sheathed the sword with Wizkid after a prolonged feud. How was that achieved?

It’s all good now. Some rich men brought us together and helped us to finally resolve our differences. This is official; no more drama.

Who are these rich men?

Some very powerful men, I can’t mention their names. It was like a round table meeting and it’s all good now.

Should your fans watch out for a possible collaboration soon?

Well, maybe. Nothing is impossible.

What stage are youin your forthcomingalbum?

I’m almost done with my album. I don’thave a title for it yet, we are still joggling the names but it’s going to be out in March, 2015. It is going to be a big album launch. The album has 20 songs. I collaborated with two American artistes, but I can’t say their names yet. But in Nigeria, I have artistes like Wande Coal, Olamide, Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage and Uhuru. Five of the songs in the album will be released; then the remaining 15 will be fresh, new and unreleased materials. I’m dropping a new song in January 2015 titled ‘The Sound’.

How do you plan to reward loyal fans and friends?

I was actually planning to do a big concert this Christmas but on a second thought, I felt I should push the concert to the album launch in March and do something almost free. It won’t also be completely free because all the proceeds from the show will go to charity. Regular tickets will just be N1,000 while the VIP will be N3,000.

Where do you plan to stage the album?

You know I’m an Island boy, and I haven’t really done something for my fans on the Mainland and the love there is just enormous. So, that’s why we plan to do it in the Mainland.

Which albums are your favourites in 2014 apart from yours?

I like M.I’s album. I also like Wizkid and Olamide’s album. But the ones I’ve really listened to and liked is that of Wizkid and M.I. At least I have four songs each that I love on the albums.

Do you have a crush on any entertainer?

In Nigeria I don’t have but if I look outside, it’s got to be Nicki Minaj. What I simply look out for in a lady is brains.

A lady that can advise me, a lady that I can talk to when I’m angry and I’ll surely know if she’s jonzing me’.
