The hottest story on the lips of many now in the political circle of Lagos State is the cold war between Gov. Babatunde Fashola and one of his commissioners, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat. What went wrong?
Those in the know squealed that the governor has been encouraging and supporting Dr. Femi Hamzat who is his Commissioner for Works to succeed him as the next governor of Lagos State come the guber election, February 2015. We were told that apart from making him the commissioner of the most juicy ministry in Lagos State, he also gave him a free hand to run the ministry as against the practice of other governors in the country who determine the contractors the works commissioners give contracts to in their ministry.
We gathered that the governor was doing all these to empower Dr. Femi Hamzat for the political battle ahead. Then something went wrong. Insiders said the governor got to hear that the commissioner allegedly supported the Gov. Rauf Aregbesola’s second term guber election in Osun State with the sum of N300million and the boss became furious.
We were told that it was at this point Gov. Fashola withdrew his support for the commissioner to succeed him and he drafted Olasupo Shasore into the governorship race as his anointed successor. We gathered, that was why Mr. Shasore came into the APC guber primary race with a bang spending about N100million within days on cover pages of Punch, Vanguard and THISDAY without blinking an eyelid. Our sources said since the APC guber primary is over and Akinwunmi Ambode has won the governorship ticket, the governor has no choice than campaigning for him as his successor, though Ambode was never his choice of a successor. Insiders said with the recent political permutation in Lagos State, Gov. Fashola’s hands seemed tied behind his back politically and there is nothing he can do about it than bow to his political godfather’s choice candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
