I Am Not A Bad Boy – Mike Ezuruonye

Mike EzuruonyeNollywood big boy and lover boy, Mike Ezuruonye has carved a niche for himself in the make-believe business, his face alone can guarantee any promoter plenty of cash. This handsome gentle man, spoke with Top Celebrities’ Assistant Editor, Sunday Adeyemi at the City People Entertainment Award nite recently held in Lagos. He explained that the entertainment industry has improved tremendously.

Everybody wants to have a snapshot with you, how exactly do you manage fame?

There is nothing like fame without the people, the people are the background of fame you acquire. If people watch your film and say this guy is not good, would you be famous? This is the reason I try as much as possible to be very close to the people. I prefer to associate with ordinary people that watch my movies to the so-called big people that will not have enough time to sit down and watch what I have done. Fame is about people recognizing you, what you do and how you can relate with people. So, I don’t allow it to get into my head but I cannot go with everybody, I hope you understand.

The entertainment industry (Nollywood) has really given lots of young guys the opportunity to thrive. How will you assess Nollywood?

Good! Let me start with Nollywood, it has improved tremendously, the industry has discovered itself, practitioners can now eat well and live comfortably. We must therefore give kudos to some of the people that made it possible. To compare it with the past, I don’t think I can do much on that because, you know we are in a global world now, things are improving on a daily basis. Take for example, the Hollywood today, things have really changed compared to some decades ago where we used analogue and semi digital cameras but today, we have all gone digital. Back in the days of theatre where stage play was the order of the day, then there were no gadgets at home to watch movie, but now with various electronic devices, you can cross your legs and watch movies anywhere instead of going to a cinema hall to watch a play. I think the western idea has taken over and the issue of theatre too has improved.

This brings to mind the issue of creativity because then theatre was purely creative while today films are done within weeks?

If you are talking about creativity, the whole process of making film is creative. The creative standard of our films now is very high, if you are a practitioner under the Nollywood umbrella, there is creativity in whatever they do but mind you, there are some people that do film and cannot be classified as a member of Nollywood. These people do not have anything to offer.

People call you a playboy and heartbreaker, do you really depict those characters in real life?

No!!! I am not a playboy; I took up those roles just because I am a professional. A professional like me must be able to interpret whatever role he’s given. So, I don’t see myself as someone that is bad. I am a gentleman, a good husband and responsible father.

Do you select roles being given to you or you just fit into whatever part you are asked to play?

Aside the interest, I am also a businessman; if you give me a role that I know I can fit in, why not. I don’t select roles because I am a professional. Like I said, a professional must be able to play any role.

Can you allow your children to take after your profession?

It depends on their interest, if they wish, I will encourage them.
