A community leader, philanthropist and an ambassador of Christ, Sir (Chief) Samuel Ohameje (KSC), has been laid to rest in his country in Umuariam, Obowo local government area of Imo state. He was aged 89.

Popular as Dee Sam among friends and admirers, the late Sir Ohameje was a devout Anglican who contributed immensely to the growth and spread of the faith beyond Obowo.

Hailed as peace maker, until he breathed his last, the patriarch of the Ohameje family was a strong and respected voice in Umuariam.

As the first President- General of what is today known as Umuariam Development Union, UDU, a position he held from 1970 to 1982, the late Sir Sam Ohameje contributed greatly to the peace, unity and development which Umuariam still enjoys till date.

Growing up , Sam had passion and zeal for education, and he indeed brilliantly excelled in his academic pursuit which saw him transverse Central School, Umuariam, Onowu Central School, Ikperejere and Ezeoke Central School, Ezeoke for his primary education.

For post primary school, Sir Ohameje attended Etukokwu Commercial College, Onitsha.

He was to later train as an Accountant, a profession that secured him job at UTC Onistha.

At the UTC, Chief Ohameje rose through the ranks, rising from Account clerk, Accountant, Financial Controller and Deputy Chairman of UTC, the last position he held before the outbreak of the Nigerian civil war.

At the end of hostilities, the late Sir Ohameje resumed his working career, this time around, with a German firm, Nigerian Technical Company, NITECO.

He meritoriously retired from the company in 1983.

Ohameje was selfless and unassuming, sacrificing comfort and opportunities just to ensure the well being of others.As the head of the Ohameje family, he made sure that the family remained closely knitted.

A consummate family man, Sir Ohameje was a dotting father to his children whom he gave Christian upbringing and quality education, and a loving husband to his darling wife, Lady Mercy Edoro Ohameje.

The two birds were to consummate their love in April 1966 when they were joined in holy matrimony.

The union was blessed with seven children and 14 grandchildren.
