Formerly know as Zazzau, Zaria is circled by walls and fortresses that largely served as refuge during war. The city has a strong traditional institution that still exists today through the emir of Zaria. However, the powers of these institutions were abruptly ended with the invasion commanded by Frederick Lugard in 1901.

The Zaria city walls and gates were an impregnable fortress that protected the inhabitants of the city from enemies and attackers.
