United Bank for Africa retired workers stormed the bank headquarters on Marina, Lagos on Wednesday July 29th 2015 chanting war songs. The retired workers are very bitter with the Africa leading bank for paying them N10,000 monthly as pension.
The retired workers comprising of managers, principal managers, supervisors and sub-managers across Nigeria wept that they get paid N10,000 only by UBA after working for the bank for 22years. Some of the pensioners brought mat which they spread at the entrance of the Africa giant bank and started sleeping.
The pensioners complained that some people working with the bank now earned N10million monthly while the pensioners who worked hard to build the bank gets only N10,000 which is not even enough to feed talkless of medical bills and school fees for their children.
Stella Obanla, a retiree from UBA Ibadan office cried out that she is now a street hawker. She said she worked with the bank from 1985 – 1997. 72years old Bamidele Adedoyin, a retired former head manager with the bank wept that he is going blind as the N10,000 he gets paid monthly cannot take care of his medical bills. He added that he worked with the bank from 1978 to 1997 and was paid N70,000 severance package.
Chief Emmanuel Ojo, Chairman of UBA Pensioners Union cried out that UBA management has been treating them badly despite their contribution to the development of the bank. He added that if the bank saw the need to increase salaries of serving workers regularly why did they not consider their pensioners who are also living in the same economy.
