Who’s Afraid Of Leo Ogor’s Leadership?

By Uzezi Goodluck

Recently the media – traditional and social – have been awash with a plethora of articles, opinions and features targeted at the former minority leader of the House of Representative, Rt Hon Leo Okuweh Ogor and his undoubted political leadership of the Isoko nation. These write ups have not only sought to question Ogor’s leadership but aimed at pulling down his hard earned reputation acquired over the years through hard work.

Giving the deluge of articles, the bellicosity and bitterness exhibited by the authors, coupled with their visible desperation to bring down the leadership of Ogor, the former minority leader of the House of Representatives and member representing Isoko Federal Constituency in the lower chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, it is obvious that there’s more than meets the eye. But there is no dispute about the fact that the actual authors of the missives are sponsored; hirelings set out to do their master’s bidding.

Why would anyone want to portray Leo, as he is fondly known in such a bad light suddenly? Why is it now important to paint the legislator in derogatory garb, when the man is not only loved by majority of Isoko people and has continued to win elections since 2003 when he was first elected to the National Assembly? Who feels threatened by Leo’s continued dominance and political leadership? Who is so desperate to dethrone the Ozoro born politician and hastily takeover as the czar of Isoko politics? These are questions begging for urgent answers.

It is rather interesting to note that recent developments in the polity have led to the unravelling of the puppet master. And it does not need possession of special powers or to be clairvoyant before the so called masquerade is unveiled dancing naked in the market square. The only surprise is that the traducer was at some point a beneficiary if Leo’s political sagacity and benevolence. If truth must be told, “the ant eating the stem is in the leaf of the tree”.

But it is vital to go backwards in our introspection to better understand how dangerous and diabolical the adversary in this instance has been since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Doing so would help us ferret our man Friday out of the cocoon and show him for who he truly is: a disciple of Baal.

With the advent of democracy in 1999, political leadership in Isoko quite naturally fell on Second Republic Senator and former majority leader of the defunct Bendel State House of Assembly, Senator Spanner Okpozo.

The leadership was unparalleled giving his pioneering role as one of the founding fathers of Delta State. But that leadership was truncated by the inordinate ambition of one man who did not rest until the elder statesman kicked the bucket and saw to his eventual burial.

With his election as the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, the lot fell on the late Rt. Hon Young Igbrude to preside over political affairs as leader. Again, the man Friday, who is obviously an agent of Satan would not stand to see Igbrude enjoy his God given position as leader.

Instead through a process of manipulation – spiritual and diabolical, the late speaker was disgraced and brought down ignominiously. At his eventual death, which everyone saw as mysterious, his kinsman regaled in the passage of an astute son of the soil.

There’s no doubting the fact that with Igbrude gone, that it was the turn of Hon Leo, who eminently became the reps minority leader, to become the leader. However, the lawmaker opted for a quasi leadership style which saw him delegating power to our inordinate ambitious one time supposed social crusader. The lawmaker did so mainly because of pressing national assignments, little did he know that that was to become his undoing.

Pundits have tried to rationalise why Leo chose to delegate leadership rather than stick to the magisterial, albeit monarchical option adopted by the forebears before him. They contend that the ex minority leader was unassuming and not intoxicated by power.

Another explanation was that he considered that Isoko nation would benefit more from that decision, giving the famed closeness of the said disciple of Baal to the then governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan. Unfortunately, “Oyibo Isoko”, as Leo is also known, discovered almost too late, that he had given space for a deadly snake to sting in a brutal manner.

It is public knowledge how the ailment which plagues Leo till date started. Whose house did he visit when he was first struck by a near fatal stroke? But, it is to the eternal shame of those who wanted him dead that the Oyibo Isoko soon bounced back, putting aside momentary setbacks to regain his leadership in Isoko. He further took back the power and gave it to the late Hon Tim Kome Owhefere, until his shocking death, the Majority Leader of the Delta House of Assembly.

Sadly, the late Tim’s romance with death ostensibly started the day he agreed to deputise for Leo in the latter’s absence. The acceptance triggered a chain of events that culminated in the untimely death of the former majority leader. Through deft chicanery, diabolism and mysticism, the Otor Owhe born legislator was lured into a web which ultimately consumed him.

It is remarkable to recall that Hon Owhefere, who represented Isoko North State Constitute in the Delta State House of Assembly was still fresh in the mortuary when his kinsman quickly raised a war army to get a replacement for the fallen Isoko son, while plotting to shoot down Leo like a meteor in the sky.

Yet, this angel of death, who lavished huge personal fund to bury Okpozo, Igbrude and Owhefere was never known to be generous to them while alive. At best he gave handouts, prompting everyone to wonder whether the trajectory was linked to diabolical or mystical powers. Why is he very quick to open the vault as soon as your death is announced?

So, haven failed to get Leo below six feet, why won’t our man simply leave him alone? Especially since the federal lawmaker has indicated that he is not contesting for the esteemed position in 2023? What is the basis for the baseless and contrived old woman’s tales seeking desperately to tar his reputation? Why are they afraid of Oyibo Isoko?

Truth is our amiable Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa triggered this latest onslaught when he openly conferred on and announced Ogor as the political leader of Isoko nation. Apparently, that coronation of Leo and subsequent directive for all other leaders to queue behind him did not go down well with some people. Their expectations were obviously dashed and they felt publicly humiliated as a result, thus began what can rightly be described as a day of long knives.

But, the agitators ought to have known that the governor made the decree based on two considerations. Leo is the highest political office holder in Isoko. Senator Okowa also told the audience boldly that “everyone knows that Leo is my friend”. This last revelation must have sounded more like poison to their ears.

I, however have one word for the wicked gloating one who is the head of the goons that have been unleashed. You cannot kill the anointed of the Lord. He that God has elevated will always remain victorious and on top, no matter the plot. So, its about time he realises that the empire is crumbling. And that gradually and surely, he’s headed for political ignominy.. Its a reality he must live with in the dark lonely days ahead.
