What’s Up With Patricia Etteh?

Patricia EttehSeven years after serving as the first female speaker of the House of Representatives for a few months, Patricia Olubunmi Etteh, the disgraced former speaker of the House of Representatives, no doubt, is one of the major casualties of Nigeria’s stuttering democracy. Her name and impact will remain indelible because she was the first woman to preside over the lower chamber of the National Assembly, and the manner at which she left the position is another one that is of interest.

The beautician-turned-politician had become the Speaker of the House of Representatives in June 2007. But less than three months into her tenure, she was accused of authorising a whopping N628 million for the renovation of her official residence and that of her deputy, as well as the purchase of 12 official cars meant for the House.

The chaos that followed led to her exit from the exalted position. She has since returned to the drawing board. And if you thought that Patricia would lie low perpetually, then you are undermining the power of a woman.

The light-skinned lady has since disappeared from the social and political scene that many are wondering where she is that her name has not been heard even during the campaign of Omisore in Osun State, where she hails from and her voice would have counted.
