Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan is a seasoned Nigerian politician and medical doctor who served as the Governor of Delta State from 2007 to 2015. A two-term governor under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he first assumed office on May 29, 2007. He was re-elected in 2011 with over 525,000 votes.
Born on October 22, 1954, in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, Uduaghan is of Itsekiri origin. He attended Federal Government College, Warri, and later studied Medicine at the University of Benin, graduating with an MBBS and a Diploma in Anaesthesia.
Before his entry into politics, Uduaghan had a successful medical career. He worked as a medical officer at Delta Steel Company in 1983 and served in several hospitals, including Westend Hospital (Warri), Benoni Hospitals (Benin), and Shell Hospital (Ogunu), where he was a consultant anaesthesiologist. In 1994, he established his own private medical practice.
He was deeply involved in medical and civic leadership, holding various roles within the Nigerian Medical Association and the Junior Chamber International (Jaycees).
He was Cmmissioner for Health, Delta State (1999–2003): Appointed by Governor James Ibori, he improved healthcare staff welfare and upgraded medical infrastructure.
Uduaghan was Secretary to the State Government (2003–2007): Played a key administrative role in state governance.
He was governor of Delta State (2007–2015). He focused on infrastructure, healthcare, and social development.
He established Sanitation Mobile Courts (2008) in partnership with the Chief Judge of Delta State to tackle public hygiene issues.
Uduaghan was a founding member of the PDP, but in 2018, he briefly joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) before returning to the PDP in 2020. In 2022, he announced his retirement from politics—but made a comeback on May 9, 2025, officially rejoining the APC. He received his membership card at his residence in Delta State, with notable party leaders in attendance.
Dr. Uduaghan is married to Roli Uduaghan and they have two children together – Orode Uduaghan and Toritseju Uduagahan.
