The Society of Landscape Architecture Students of Nigeria have embarked on various Landscape Advocacy Programmes, Projects, Competitions and Campaigns that will help in absorbing and harnessing the Climate Change and Global Warming issues, to better equip them to carry out their various landscape advocacy campaigns, projects and competition thereof.
To achieve this, various clubs or environment ambassadors which cut across all group has been enacted.
At the Press Conference recently organized by The Society of Landscape Architecture Students of Nigeria (SLASON), sponsored by Sterling Bank of Nigeria held at The University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State.
Speaking to journalist on the project, the Project Coordinator, Mr. Gbogboade Seun Opeyemi said the world is running out of time to solve its global issue, and at this point we need to decide whether everyone will work or move forward together to tackle this issue or we will all split apart, whether we like being forced or we take action ourselves. “The time for talk is over and this is the time for action. Everybody needs to be involved to save the earth. Enough of us directing all the blames to fossil companies. Let us petition ourselves to mitigate this issue because we are all a part of global warming,” he said.
Present at the conference include Landscape Enthusiast such as Dr. Cosmos Maduka (President and Chairman of Coscharis Group), Arabella, Dr. M.B.O Adegbile (HOD Architecture, University of Lagos).
Some of these ambassadors include Toddler Landscape Ambassadors (TLAs), Junior Landscape Ambassadors (JLAs), Senior Landscape Ambassadors (SLAs), Undergraduate Landscape Ambassadors (ULAs), Master Landscape Ambassadors (MLAs) and Volunteer Landscape Enthusiasts (VLEs) in prominent Primary Schools, Junior Secondary Schools, Seniour Secondary Schools, tertiary institutions and local community volunteers respectively, throughout the state, country and beyond, to begin to embrace the severity of climate change and their little contributions at their local level to mitigate the global warming effect, finding simple yet, effective and efficient ways to solve global landscape issues that will help integrate them into the profession in the years to come.
Details of the various projects, competitions, campaigns and programmes, which will run from January 2015 through to October 2015 are highlighted below:
A WORLD WITHOUT FUMES
For 270,000 Toddler Landscape Ambassadors (TLAs) i.e. children within ages 2-3 years, 4-5 years and 6-7 years under both the “Story Telling” and “Speed Painting” sub-categories, in 15,000 public and privately owned Crèches, Nursery and Primary Schools, Pre – Schools, Kindergartens, Associations and Orphanages in Nigeria.
TREE PLANTING AND ADOPTION PROJECT
Though undergoing a pilot phase scheme at the National level in Zaria and Lagos, the project is designed for 100,000 Junior Landscape Ambassadors (JLAs) in 5,000 Junior Secondary Schools in Nigeria to plant and adopt 10 trees each throughout their stay in secondary education.
WATERSHED CLEAN UP PROJECT
A one–of–a–kind life changing, marine, beach and watershed clean up project using the boom collection system. Its exclusivity is reserved for 100,000 Senior Landscape Ambassadors (SLAs) in 5,000 Senior Secondary Schools in Nigeria.
REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE
A global home waste bin design competition for 1,000,000 Undergraduate Landscape Ambassadors (ULAs) in Undergraduate Studies in 10,000 Tertiary Institutions worldwide that helps to separate waste from the source into five (5) categories i.e. paper, plastic, glass, metals and decomposables.
TREE HOUSE DESIGN
A master class high-tech high-touch design competition amongst 100,000 Master Landscape Ambassadors (MLAs) in Postgraduate Studies in 1,000 Tertiary Institutions across the World to cater for the group needs of the TLAs, JLAs, SLAs, ULAs, MLAs and VLE.
GREENWALK OF LIFE
Affirmatively not a protest, but surprisingly a somewhat creative 1,500,000 petition march of ourselves to the government and people of the world to fashion out and embrace new ways for leading sustainable lives, taking big steps with little feet; It meets the advocacy needs of Volunteer Landscape Enthusiasts (VLEs) in schools, organisations and living in communities across the State, the Federation and the world in retrospect.
INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE
Sub themed, “The Landscape Prerogative ”, it is a no brainer for obvious reasons, as this conference will boasts an array of over 1,000,000 online viewers, indigenous and international climate change speakers, and is a one-size-fits-all conference for ALL concerned with the minimization of carbon emissions and green house gasses in particular and the survivalistic perspective to humanity in general.
EURO-ASIA EDUTOURISM
Exclusively defined for 150 Master of Landscape Architecture Students (MLAs) in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria for the accumulation of study points as a necessity for graduation, with special considerations for ULAs an VLEs that have proven selves to be of immense benefit to ensuring their immediate communities lead sustainable lifestyles with particular attention to the reduction of the greenhouse gasses.
THE LANDSCAPE STUDIO AND FACILITATORS PROJECT
…A befitting practical learning studio spaces for the advancement of the Master of Landscape Architecture Programme in the Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria is equally matched with the attainment of a world class degree with world acclaimed Landscape Educators and Facilitators of international repute, necessary to put us on a pedestal thread yet, by no other with particular attention to the rehabilitation of the studio spaces and the full – time and adjunct lecturers required for the pursuit of excellence!
