That Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s son, Seun has been in police custody for slapping a police officer since Monday, May 15th, 2023 is an established fact.
Be that as it may, the musician is still in detention as police couldn’t complete their investigation into allegations of assault leveled against him.
He was moved from the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja to the State Criminal Investigation Department Yaba, where he was interrogated into the night.
He was then moved to a cell where he passed the night. Police sources said he may be arraigned in court.
Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin in a terse statement on Monday night said:
“Contrary to some people’s emotion-laden expectations, we are smart enough not to torture him.”
“We will not undermine our case. Not a finger has been laid on him nor will be laid on him. Like we assured, full and transparent investigation…”
Fresh information reaching us has it that Seun Kuti has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos State on Tuesday, May 16th, 2023.
The court equally denied the police attempt to detain him for 21 days.
The Police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese had prayed that the court remand the defendant for 21 days.
Adebese said that the three weeks would allow the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prepare legal advice.
Seun’s lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) opposed the plea in his argument.
