PathCare Trains Doctors On Kidney Stones, Others

Every year, the world kidney day is marked in the month of March to draw attention to the need for kidney health. In alignment with this, PathCare Laboratories, dedicated resources to training doctors on Kidney stones in a lecture titled, “KIDNEY STONES; UNRECOGNIZED, UNDIAGNOSED AND UNTREATED”, in the first of its tri-annual Doctors Forum for 2015, held recently in Lagos and Abuja.

The PathCare Doctors Forum training on Kidney Stones was handled by Dr. Leye Ajayi, a Consultant Urological Surgeon with Royal Free London NHS Foundation, who is also one of the leading specialists in the management of Kidney stones using non-invasive procedures, in the United Kingdom. He revealed that kidney stone is more common among Africans than is currently acknowledged and it is poorly recognized by Physician in Nigeria because of paucity of diagnostic equipment and the fact that it mimics a lot of other more common conditions.

Dr. Ajayi further revealed in his lecture that unimaginable pain is a major symptom of kidney stones. “So doctors need to have a high index of suspicion when patients present with severe back pain. Patients can also present with fever or feel unwell, which is why it is sometimes mistaken for malaria. The danger of untreated kidney stone is that it could lead to loss of the kidney with patients needing dialysis or transplant.”

According to Dr. Ajayi, patients can make full recovery if diagnosed and treated early enough. “We always encourage our stone patients to be properly hydrated. In the UK, the intake of about 2-3 litres of water a day is recommended, but because of our climate in Nigeria, patients will probably drink 4-5 liters to reduce the risk of forming new stones.”

Speaking at the event, Dr. Olawale Olusanya, a Consultant Pathologist at PathCare Laboratories further revealed that part of the objectives of organizing the Doctors Forum, which is Nigerian Medical and Dental council accredited Continuous Medical Education (CME) program, was to update doctors on the current trends in the management of various health conditions. He said “PathCare, in conjunction with its partner, the Bridge Clinic, has continued to invest in Doctors Forum program, because we recognise the importance of continuous training of doctors and other medical personnel in order to build a sustainable and high quality healthcare in Nigeria.”

The PathCare Doctors Forum also featured Dr. Seun Akinyemi of the Department of Health Policy and Management College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, who treated the topic “Decoding the National Health Bill – What Every Physician in Private Practice Needs To Know”. He said that passage of the health bill was important for development of the Health sector. However he noted some loopholes in the bill which need to be reviewed to ensure that there was proper implementation of the bill and also ensures that doctors in private practice do not become victims as the current health bill recognizes the contribution of private practitioners in Nigeria health system

The over 500 doctors who attended the PathCare’s symposium in Lagos and Abuja also had access to an exposure on how sports and exercise can be incorporated into medical treatment of disorders like diabetes and hypertension was handled by Dr Dayo Osholowo, an expert in Sports Medicine, in a lecture titled, “Current Concerts in Sports Medicine”.
