Rave of the moment, Adekunle Gold, is no stranger to the Nigerian music industry. He wrote his first song at the age of 15 as a member of a junior church choir. He is a prince in the royal family of Kosoko in Lagos. Having released visual to his brand new single ‘Orente’, which has gone viral, Adekunle Gold has not only proved critics wrong with his unique and stylish way of singing, but shown he has come to stay in the business.

We recently cornered the YBNL-signed act and quizzed him on what inspired his hit single ‘Orente’. “Orente is like a Yoruba praise name for women -virtuous women, special girls, those girls that will stand by their men in times of trouble – because I have noticed that a lot of songs these days talk about side-chicks and all of that. I see a lot of great girls and relationships around me, I know some of my female friends around me that are really good. So, I decided to sing about them so that the world will know that there are still good girls in the world,” he said.

On how he encountered YBNL, he said  “I have been friends with Olamide. I have been designing for Olamide from way back. I designed the YBNL logo and did a couple of things for him. So when I dropped ‘Sade’, he liked it and concluded it’s best I joined his team, YBNL. Ever since then, it’s been amazing. The whole YBNL family has been supportive. Honestly, my brother, Olamide is a great guy. I have never had any cause to regret meeting him.” On his relationship status, he declined making any comment, stating, he’d like to leave it private.

The graduate of Lagos State Polytechnic with a degree in Graphics, in 2010, formed a band called The Bridge with his best friend. They released four songs ‘No sleeping on a bicycle’, ‘Norm Breaker’ featuring Skales and ‘All of me’ (John legend cover). In 2013, he left ‘The Bridge’ to debut as a solo act. Having identified his style of music, he released a song titled ‘Let it stop’, a song about peace for the nation.

In 2014, he released his version of One Direction’s ‘Story of my life”, which he titled ‘Sade’. This song, which enjoyed massive airplay across the federation, got him signed to YBNL.
