Nigerian legendary actor and film executive, Olu Jacobs is dead. The veteran actor died at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs announced his death in a post on Instagram on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

He wrote: “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”

“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs was born to parents from Egba Alake. He spent his early childhood in Kano, where he attended Holy Trinity School and developed an interest in drama. Inspired by Chief Hubert Ogunde’s stage performances, he travelled to England to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London.

He began his professional career on the British stage and television, appearing in several productions before featuring in international films, including The Dogs of War, Pirates and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend.

Upon returning to Nigeria in 1990, Jacobs became one of the most respected figures in Nollywood, starring in more than 120 films and numerous television productions.

In 1989, he married fellow actress Joke Silva, with whom he co-founded the Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. Over the years, Jacobs received numerous honours for his contribution to the Nigerian film industry, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in 2021.
