Information reaching us right now has it that a 38-year-old woman, identified as Mrs. Veronica Igwe has allegedly sold her four-year-old daughter.

Girl traded for N100 by mother

We gathered Veronica, who could not offset her debt has traded her daughter, Uloma to the trader, Mrs. Josephine Nwali whom she is owing a debt of N100 in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

However, Mrs. Cecilia Elom, Desk Officer in charge of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State disclosed that… “The ministry received a call last Tuesday that Veronica traded her daughter because of her inability to settle the N100 debt. Officials of the ministry rushed to CAS campus of the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, where the suspect resides.”

“On reaching the area, we saw little Uloma with another seven-year-old boy hawking. When we interrogated them, they said Nwali, whom they were living with, forced them to hawk.”

Conversely, Veronica squealed that she had bought some items from the trader at the Rice Mill, Abakaliki, in August 2017 and that she owed her N100 after the transaction. She was said to have suggested to release one of her children in exchange for the N100 debt.

Veronica allegedly professed she did not know where the trader (Nwali) lives, but the transaction took place at the rice mill where they both worked. We were informed Veronica hailed from Okposi Umuoghara, in the Ezza North Local Government Council of Ebonyi while the trader came from Okoffia, in the Ezza South LGA of the state.
