Fake Soldier Arrested In Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command recently paraded a fake soldier who was arrested for killing a motor boy with a gun at a car wash at Leme area of Abeokuta, the State capital.

The suspect,  Olatunbosun Tunde a.k.a soldier, 49, was among the nine other suspects paraded by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Illiyasu at the police Headquarters, Eleweran for various criminal offences.

Illiyasu said Olatunbosun after committing the crime fled to Togo but the police through technology intelligence tracked and lured the suspect back to the country by arresting his wife (name withheld) and apprehended him last week’s Thursday.

According to the police boss, some of the items recovered from him included one avar pump action gun with serial number 15-0083, 43 live cartridges, two camouflage army trousers, a camouflage army knicker, one camouflage army jungle cap and seven pairs of different vehicle plate numbers.

Illiyasu stated that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was a leader of a notorious armed bandit terrorizing Abeokuta and its environs.

He added that the suspect’s gang was specialised in snatching of vehicles, kidnapping and impersonating military officers to dupe unsuspecting members of the public.

Reacting on why he killed the victim, Olatunbosun who was a native of Ilaro area of the State said “‘I have told you, when we are dragging, the bullet came out, it is a mistake. I only want to use the gun to scare him”.

The suspect disclosed that he was a trainer at the Maritime Navy Academy, Iperu before the programme was halt and “Tokunbo” car dealer and the said gun was a licensed one, saying he was using the gun to scare thieves away from his compound as a car dealer.

He denied running to Republic of Togo after the incident but said he went to stay at his house located at Camp area of Abeokuta.

On why he didn’t remove the gun from safety, Olatunbosun stated “I always load it with seven to six cartridges to protect my cars in the night and I forgot because I was rushing the next morning which is a Saturday (environmental) to see someone that wants to buy car from me and I branch at the car wash to wash the car because it was dirty”.

The suspect who disclosed that he has sold over 500 cars to people in Abeokuta said he regretted his action, insisting that if he sees the victim’s family, whatever they ask, he would do it.

He said the plate numbers caught with him was used to avoid arrest from customs. The suspect said he was ready to face the necessary consequence for his action.

Also paraded for impersonation were Olamilekan Ibrahim and two accomplices Sunday Akpabio and Sunny Tijani. Items recovered from them are military uniform and one Nigeria Legion Identification card.

Ibrahim revealed that he bought the army uniform for N2,000 and used it to scare people and he was arrested when he went to settle a land dispute.

He said he’s a 100 level student of University of Ibadan, Distance Learning, studying Psychology and he just paid his acceptance fee recently. “I’m not aware that wearing army uniform was an offence,” and has pleaded for mercy.”
