Former President Muhammadu Buhari is dead.

He passed away on Sunday, July 13th, 2025 in a hospital in London. He died at the age of 82.

His former spokesperson, Garba Shehu disclosed this in a statement on his official X handle.

He wrote: “The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

For those who don’t know, Muhammadu Buhari was a retired major general. He was Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, he rose to national prominence as a military leader.

He first led Nigeria as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 after taking power in a coup. His regime was known for its anti-corruption stance and strict discipline but was criticized for its authoritarian style.

After several attempts at returning to power through democratic means, Buhari was elected President in 2015 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. His election marked Nigeria’s first peaceful transition of power between political parties.

Buhari served two terms as President, leaving office in 2023.
