The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade has denied the rumoured war between him and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi over supremacy.

A statement issued on Thursday August 21, 2025 by Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye said:

“Alaafin’s focus remains on the welfare, culture, and development of his people, not on rivalry with any traditional ruler.”

“The Alaafin does not need to engage in any battle for supremacy with any Oba, whether in Yorubaland or elsewhere.”

“He is a steadfast custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, always mindful of the safety and welfare of his subjects.”

“Alaafin’s reign is guided by results and the prosperity of his people, Alaafin remains committed to upholding the cultural heritage of Oyo and Yorubaland.”

“Alaafin’s role is a traditional authority dedicated to protecting and promoting Yoruba values. Alaafin pledges to continue strengthening the cultural legacy of the throne.”

“Alaafin’s administration will remain focused on unity, peace, and the collective progress of his people.”

For those who don’t know, the rumoured conflict began after the Ooni conferred a chieftaincy title of “Okanlomo of Oduwa” on Ibadan-based businessman, Chief Dotun Sanusi — a move that reportedly displeased the Alaafin, who subsequently issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding that the Ooni revoke the title.
