The current News and Content Director at AFROSPORT TV, Deji Omotoyinbo, shared valuable insights into the realities of sports journalism during a 45-minute lecture at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, on 2 December, 2025.
Speaking on his career journey, Mr. Omotoyinbo emphasized that genuine passion remains the foundation of success in the media industry. “Whatever you want to do in life, you must have interest and passion,” he told the students, adding that no journalist should allow themselves to be swayed by financial inducements. “Don’t let people think they can buy you with money,” he warned.
He highlighted hard work, preparation, and consistency as essential qualities for any aspiring broadcaster. According to him, a presenter’s performance in the studio is only as strong as the effort put in beforehand. “Before you go to the studio, you must have done your homework. People must be able to enjoy and engage with your work,” he said.
Speaking further, he stressed that integrity remains the most valuable asset for any media professional. According to him, “For you to work in a media house, your strongest currency is your integrity. The moment you lose your integrity over money, you can never regain it.”
Addressing the challenges young journalists often face, the sports broadcaster advised students to define their goals early and remain true to their values, even under pressure. He emphasized that integrity is essential, noting that journalists who uphold it earn respect in any environment.
Mr. Omotoyinbo also discussed editorial control in newsrooms, explaining that editors may occasionally withhold stories due to political or organizational considerations. He advised students to remain resilient, emphasizing that as long as a story is authentic, it can always be revisited or published at a later time.
He concluded the lecture by emphasizing two key cornerstones of journalism: reputation and consistency. He encouraged students to value honour above money, noting that respect is far more valuable than financial gain. The session ended with HND 1 journalism students expressing appreciation, describing the lecture as inspiring and an eye opener to the realities of sport journalism.
