The incidence of parental preference for male children resurfaces this week as Glo-sponsored TV drama series, Professor Johnbull, scrutinises the issue in its seventh episode which airs on Tuesday.

The episode will provide answers to questions such as: Does a child’s gender determine how successful he or she will be in life? Should a male child be accorded more position of importance than the girl-child? Will a girl-child thrive just as well as her male counterpart, given the same platform of opportunities, love and care in life? The erudite professor and his ‘proximate’ people view the issue from different standpoints but all come to a conclusion that will excite viewers of the drama which has attracted more eyeballs to the tube in recent time than any other drama series on Nigerian TV.

Aptly titled Baby Bomboi, the episode showcases the myriad of discriminatory acts targeted at an average girl-child as well as the widespread bias in favour of the male-child in a fiercely patriarchal society like Nigeria.

Viewers will be confronted with Athan, played by Stan Kamandi, and how he receives the news of the birth of his fifth consecutive girl? The reactions of the key members of the community as well as the insightful, philosophical and oft-pastoral  Professor Johnbull will set the tone for the drama while also dissecting the right approach to curbing the social malady?

The popular sitcom has assumed a pride of place in tele-viewing in the country as a result of its focus on contemporary topics central to the cause of patriotism and good neighbourliness, especially in a poly-ethnic society like Nigeria.  The drama series is beamed on Tuesday at 8.30 p.m. on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV Channel 251 and NTA on StarTimes, while repeat broadcasts hold on the same channels and same time every Friday.
