Since a video which captures Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu, who publicly snubbed the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi at a public function went viral, it has been generating reactions from eminent Nigerians.

The video which lasted for 27 seconds shows the Ooni of Ife arriving the venue of an event, where he exchanged pleasantries with the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe. The Ooni’s attempt to greet Oba Akiolu who was seated next to the Obi of Onitsha was rebuffed by the Lagos monarch who simply waved his hand and ignored the Ooni.

Meanwhile, Chief Femi Okunrounmu has lambasted the Oba of Lagos for his behaviour saying that the Oba’s action was an embarrassment to the Yoruba race. “Oba Akiolu’s action portrayed the Yoruba as an unorganised set of people before the world. It was unfortunate that some monarchs in Yoruba land did not seek the interest of their subjects. Yoruba elders should talk to Oba Akiolu on his termed unbecoming behaviour.

Also, Chief Aremu Okikiola, President-General of the Agbekoya Farmers Association in Nigeria expressed his dissatisfaction; “Any mature traditional ruler should not fight in the public. They should find a way of solving whatever the issue is in private. The Ooni and the Alaafin are the most respected Yoruba obas. Akiolu should not disrespect the tradition. Akiolu should not be rude to that extent because he is only an Oba of Lagos. Agbekoya will not support any traditional ruler that is rude to the Ooni.”
