After ten years of near extinction, the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) is back and stronger and set to dominate the copyright sector in the years ahead.
This was the message delivered by the Koolman Revolutionaire, Orits Williki, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, to the members of the Society which held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 in the city of Lagos.
In a speech delivered at the impressively attended meeting, the veteran Reggae Artiste told the members that the fact that the meeting was holding at all after such a long time is the first sign of victory the Society has achieved despite machinations of detractors.
“Today, we are happy to be back and stronger than we were ten years ago. The reasons for this could be gleaned from the reports given today by the Board of Directors, the Auditors and those mentioned therein” Williki told the members of the Society who came from all over the country.
He commended the members for their steadfastness and loyalty to MCSN which he claimed kept the Society alive for the ten years that it was in the trenches fighting for corporate survival through the National Assembly, the Office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation and the Courts up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria concluding that;
“Without your tenacity and faithfulness, MCSN could not have survived the orchestrated onslaught to kill it”
Continuing, he said; “Going by the events, the future of the Society would be seen as very bright as it has become clear and beyond doubt that our Society was founded on very sound legal footing. This made it possible for the Society to remain in existence and weathered the storm aimed at killing or sinking it for upwards of twenty years when the collecting society regime was introduced into our laws”
The four-point agenda of receiving and considering the Chairman’s Report of recent events and developments surrounding the society, receiving and considering the Directors Report for the year ended 31st December 2018, and receiving and approving the Financial Report for the year ended 31st December 2018 and the Auditors Report thereon. These reports were adopted and approved by the General Assembly.
And when it came to the agenda of any other business, members showered their appreciation on the Chairman of the Board and the Chief Executive Officer of the Society, Mr. Mayo Ayilaran for steering the Society from near extinction to its present pride of place. The members called on the Board and Management of the Society not to rest on their oars
Mr. Ayilaran in response to the commendation of members promised that the management will work harder to ensure that members are adequately rewarded for their commitment and loyalty to MCSN.
