Kelechi Emeteole Is Dead

Former Nigerian player and Coach, Kelechi Emeteole is dead. The legendary coach died in India on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 after battling with cancer of the throat, which has seen him bedridden for over six months.

His health problem started early this year (2017) when he was diagnosed with throat cancer and the public had to raise money for him to undergo a surgery worth $11,000 in India. However, he died before a corrective surgery could be performed on him.

According to a close source who confirmed his dead, he said: “Kelechi Emeteole has passed on. I just spoke with his wife. I woke up to see 13 missed calls and quickly grabbed the phone. The wife broke the bad news and I’m devastated. I spoke to the wife on Monday and she even called me back through whatsApp video call. I saw coach on a bed receiving a drip getting ready for the surgery to remove the pipe on his neck. He waved at me, little did I know it was a sad goodbye wave.”

For those who don’t know, Kelechi Emeteole was fondly called Caterpillar during his stint with the Green Eagles of Nigeria due to his ruggedness and doggedness. He made 17 international appearances for the Green Eagles, scoring four goals. He was also among Nigeria’s coaching crew that led the Nigeria U17 to the FIFA U17 World Cups in China, 1985 and Canada, 1987. He also played for Rangers International. Similarly, in the Nigerian domestic league, Emeteole coached Heartland FC, Enugu Rangers and El Kanemi.
