Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State is in hot soup as the Ogun State Chapter of the Assembly of Patriots International has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to investigate his educational qualifications.
In a petition sent to the IGP and signed by the Group Secretary, Olasukanmi Oyekale, it reads;
“We are compelled to call for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of Gov. Dapo Abiodun for alleged offensces bordering on perjury as stated in the August 4th 2019 publication of Sunday Independent Newspaper.”
“Although we are aware that an executive governor cannot be prosecuted while in office, the Supreme Court has clearly ruled that a governor can be investigated and if found culpable, should be prosecuted upon exit from office.”
“As stated in the said August 4th 2019 Sunday Independent report, Gov. Dapo Abiodun as a candidate of APC, Ogun State, claimed under oaths in his form CF001 (2015 and 2019) submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission through his party, APC that he attended schools that have turned out to be false.”
“Under the Criminal Code, Law of the Federation, Volume 4, Cap C38, Part III, Chapter 14, Section 118. It reads thus, “Any person who commits perjury is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years.” The offence of perjury in Section 117 of the code reads, “Any person who, in judicial proceeding, or for the purpose of instituting any judicial proceeding, knowingly gives false testimony touching any matter which is material to any question then depending in that proceeding, or intended to be raised in that proceeding, is guilty of an offence, which is called perjury.”
“As clearly shown on the face value of the attached forms CF001 that Governor Dapo Abiodun filled and signed on oath in 2015 and 2019, he clearly committed an offence by knowingly providing false information with the view to misleading the electoral umpire and benefit from same by criminally claiming to have attended and obtaining none existing educational qualifications.”
“We, therefore, implore you to use your good offices as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate thoroughly, the possible involvement and collusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which screened and certified the credentials submitted to it by Gov. Dapo Abiodun, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its roles in this nefarious act.”
“It is our sincere hope that this petition will receive the attention it deserves because a crime is a crime regardless of who committed it. At this critical stage of our democracy, all hands must be on deck to preserve and uphold the Rule of Law because, without it, society will be reduced to lawlessness where anarchy reigns supreme.”
