Col. Kingsley Umoh Seeks Media Partnership

The new Public Relation Officer (DDAPR), of I Division of Nigerian Army, with his team recently paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council. The media tour approved by the General Officer Commanding I Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adeniyi Oyebade he said was meant to solicit partnership with the media. This he finds very germane to strengthening peace and unity amongst the people of Kaduna state. The role of the media Col. Kingsley said cannot be over emphasized as they are not only the mirror of the society but mouth piece of the people. For peace to reign, it is therefore of paramount importance that more be emphasized on what unite us as a people rather than what divides us. The biggest challenge he said is that of finding themselves on a cross road when it comes to taking action on criminal cases.

“Our big challenge as military is, if you want to take an action, the opposite group would feel one is against them. That is why we are being careful on criminal cases.  No religion requires you to kill a person in other to be a better person. Islam does not advocate killing. Christianity does not advocate killing even traditional religion does not.”

Re affirming the division’s commitment to serving the people better he said the assumption that the military is not open is wrong.

“It is always assumed that the military is not open. That is not true. This is the era of change as such we are using this media to solicit the cooperation of both the media and the public in order to serve you better.

Responding, the Council Chairman, Adamu Yusuf congratulating the new PRO on his new task commended the tireless efforts of both the Nigerian Army and the State Police Command in maintaining peace in southern Kaduna. He assured the Division of the council’s readiness to partner with them but not without expressing some worries over the existing  sour relationship between the two saying the  synergy can only work when there is sincerity of purpose and the media being given due recognition in carrying out its duties. Yusuf informed that the council has sanitized the system by fishing out fake  and quack journalists who perpetrate themselves in the name of the union and commit all manners of atrocities. He therefore assured the Division of effective and unbiased reportage of activities.

The visit was rounded off with the chairman leading the team to the correspondents Chapel’s office that was recently engulfed in fire. The source of the unfortunate incidence which destroyed all working tools in the office is yet to be ascertained. The NUJ therefore call for the intervention of agencies and well -meaning Nigerians to help provide succor for an enabling environment that would boost effective reportage.
