Anambra Assembly In Disarray

Information at our disposal has it that there is total chaos at the Anambra State House of Assembly as two speakers have now emerged following the impeachment of the speaker, Rt. Hon. Rita Maduagwu on Tuesday November 13, 2018.

Rt. Hon. Rita Maduagwu

Twenty out of 30 members of the House had earlier impeached Maduagwu over financial impropriety, gross misconduct, incompetence and sundry allegations.

We gathered that the motion to impeach the speaker was moved by Hon. Ikem Uzozie, representing Aguata II constituency and was seconded by Hon. Onyebuchi Offor of Ekwusigo constituency while three members who refused to join in the exercise were suspended.

Sources told us that Hon. Uzozie was thereafter nominated for speaker by his group, but the Clerk of the House, Pius Udoh, allegedly sneaked out from the chamber to avoid swearing in Uzozie.

However, while addressing the House, Maduagwu said; “Nobody can impeach me because I have not committed any offence. They didn’t have any power known to any law to impeach me. They needed two-thirds of our members to impeach me or the governor. So, I’m still the speaker.”

Sources added that Maduagwu with some government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Solo Chukwulobe, regained access to the chamber after about two hours and held a session with 11 members. She adjourned the House till November 15.
